The R115-million refurbishment and expansion of Peermont's Umfolozi Hotel, Casino and Convention Resort just outside Richards Bay brings with it the first-of-its-kind convention and conferencing facilities to Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal. With the addition of the Jabulani Arena and the Umoba Rooms, the resort becomes the first conference venue in the region to boast the accompanying accommodation needed by business travellers. Umfolozi offers a great choice of magnificent conference, banquet, exhibition, team building, business facilities and serves as a splendid wedding venue. The resort also includes a new and exciting 3-star Metcourt hotel, a full casino and various entertainment options which guests can enjoy during their stay.
The new look resort represents everything that you would expect from a luxury resort including fine dining, manicured gardens, elegant décor and a host of entertainment and leisure facilities. The upgrade includes the development of the modern 3-star Peermont Metcourt Hotel, the refurbishment of the casino, the addition of the conferencing facilities, and the complete overhaul of the restaurant public areas in the resort.
Modern conferencing facilities with flexible configuration capacities include the massive Jabulani Arena, Umoba, Imvubu and Ingwenya room. The Jabulani Arena is a permanent tented structure on the property that includes facilities to host events for up to 350 guests (cocktail style) or 450 (banquet style) and 600 (free standing). This means the resort is the only venue in the Empangeni region capable of hosting larger music shows and large-scale events.
The Umoba Room can accommodate 180 people (cinema style), 150 (school room style) or 56 (boardroom style), which makes it the ideal venue for any event. The Umoba Room can be also separated into two smaller venues that individually seat 80 people cinema style.
Each conference room has independently controlled lighting and air conditioning and can function simultaneously or independently. Tea and coffee facilities are easily accessible from the conferencing facility with all other meals being provided by the resort's dedicated banqueting department. "At Umfolozi we are very aware that one of the contributing factors to a delegate's positive conference experience is the standard of catering. This is why we go out of our way to make sure that we design menus that cater for every group's needs" says Herman Brits, General Manager for the Umfolozi Resort.
Umfolozi also introduces an outdoor adventure park, the Kikizela Action Park, perfect team building or a fun outing for the family with an outdoor boma. The Kikizela Action Park is a unique corporate event facility which includes a climbing wall plus two air-filled action features called face-off and mini-swing, perfect for corporate functions and action packed team-building sessions - a welcome alternative to KwaZulu-Natal's existing attractions.
Once the hard work is over for the day, delegates can relax and unwind in the opulent surroundings of the resort. A central courtyard with its own pool terrace is the perfect place for delegates to gather together for a few sundowners or alternatively guests can have a private evening function at the boma. And if that isn't enough, there is always the thrill of the casino to entertain delegates well into the night.
"For the business traveller, Umfolozi not only offers the very best in conferencing facilities and meeting rooms but also a host of other entertainment options. Guests can dine in the Umoja Bistro, enjoy evening drinks and entertainment at The Sugar Room Bar and Lounge; visit our casino, or enjoy a relaxing evening under the stars in our open air boma" says Herman Brits.
The elegant 44 room 3-star Metcourt hotel is a welcome addition to the Empangeni region as the Umfolozi Resort is now the only venue capable of hosting a large conference or event and offering business and leisure travellers accommodation options. This means that visitors to the area can experience conferencing facilities, and then can rejuvenate safely with no need to travel.
Herman Brits continues, "The addition of a new Peermont Metcourt hotel, conference centre and multi-purpose entertainment and events arena to our revamped casino complex will provide guests with progressive and inexpensive accommodation, as well as much-needed meeting and entertainment facilities in the Richards Bay and Empangeni areas."
For business travellers and conferencing groups the Empangeni region has many added attractions including dozens of game reserves, beaches, deep sea fishing and diving, mountain trails, cultural activities and a number of historical sites. Places of interest include: The Empangeni Art and Cultural History Museum, Shakaland Cultural Village, St Lucia Wetlands (a World Heritage Site) and Thulazihleke Pan (a bird lover paradise) to name a few. A multitude of outdoor activities and scenic attractions are bound to keep any visitor busy 24/7.
