Russian State Kuban Cossack Dance Company to perform at Emperors Palace
19 August 2009
Audiences are in for a rare treat this spring when the Russian State Kuban Cossack Dance Company performs at Emperors Palace between 17 and 20 September at the Theatre of Marcellus – five shows only.
The Russian State Kuban Cossack Dance Company is part of the oldest Kuban Cossack Chorus, with a history that goes back to 1811. The 200 year-old Company started off as a military choir within the Kuban Cossack Army and mainly performed in local churches during religious services. The Company soon started to expand their repertoire and began to give secular stage performances with classical pieces and folk songs.
The Company has been under the artistic leadership of the highly respected Victor G. Zakharchenko since 1974 and has seen it reach acclaim though the awarding of several prestigious honours in recent years.
Zakharchenko has enhanced the Company's performing style through use of folkloric songs and brilliant and dynamic dances that showed the virtuoso technique of the Cossacks, who use traditional weaponry: rifles, sabers, daggers, spears and even cannons, to make the choreographic compositions especially spectacular.
Its performances have received enthusiastic applause in the USA, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico, France, Germany, Spain, Norway, Vietnam, Korea, Sweden, Portugal, Morocco, Poland, Belgium and Hungary, to name but a few, with the Company performing in the finest venues in the major capitols across the globe.
The following are a few examples of their international reviews:
"Through its brilliantly masterful art, Kuban Cossacks offers a precious glimpse of the multi-layered history of Russia. The show was a tremendous spectacle. Once again the Cossacks took over Paris!"
"Le Figaro," France.
"The skill of their dancers is beyond compare. They are capable of wonders! The powerful voices of their singers enthrall the most seasoned connoisseurs."
