Boxing Legends Reunion at Emperors Palace!

30 June 2011

The “World Boxing Hall of Fame” along with the “International Boxing Hall of Fame” is of course the ultimate achievement for being the best pugilist of your time. South African’s can be proud of their man Brian Mitchell as he is the only boxer from our country to achieve this status. The inaugurations of the elite took place this past week amongst 40,000 people, from all over the world.

Mitchell’s photo hangs proudly on the wall amongst such legends as Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Joe Louis and Mike Tyson.  Wow what an honour. Unfortunately South Africa is yet to embrace this great fighting Ambassador three years down the line.

However the fascination continues long after a boxer retires - boxing fans are staunch supporters and get to “feel” the punches as if they were actually fighting the fight. They will show you how to throw a left and a right and how to bob & weave, while shadow boxing. The fans never forget their heroes. Unfortunately we do not showcase our ex fighters enough, this is the reason for bringing our ex-fighters and their fans together.

The East Rand Veterans Association, the newly formed Soweto Veterans Association, African Ring, Golden Gloves and Emperors Palace have joined hands to create awareness of the association of ex-fighters.  It is customary for fighters to hug each other at the end of a contest. The opportunity has come for those fighters to hug one another and remember the good times. Photographs of ex-fighters will be displayed.  The reunion, on 2 July in the Theatre of Marcellus, will begin at 14H00 and at 16H00 we will feature six bouts.

The fighters attending are too many to name, however take a look at a few of the greats that will be there:-  Anthony Morodi, Kid Borias, Thomas Sitebe, Jan Bergman, Gerald Isaac. Kid Bassey Buqwana, Hands of Stone Ladwaba, Dingaan Thobela, Sugarboy Malinga, Jimmy Abbott, Piet Crous, Freddie Rafferty, Brian Mitchell, Gerrie Du Bruyn, Johhny Wood, Spider Kelly, Jan Kies, Jimmy Richards, Harold Volbrecht, Kosie Smith and many many more.
